Tickets in Hand!!!

We got our tickets today! I really appreciate Wonderland for being so flexible and open to my vacation request and buying the tickets. In general, it is a great hagwon and such a respectable employer. Coming to Korea was just a great idea and not one day goes by that I don't recognize how much this little Asian country has given me.

I'll be leaving Korea on the 26th of July and returning on the 7th of September!!! Nice, huh? One thing to mention though. When I come back, I'll be replacing Rhett. This is huge. Rhett has been a driving force at Wonderland for 5 years. He's transformed the curriculum and made his name there. He has gone to bat for so many teachers not because he always cared for them or agreed with them, but because he is fiercly loyal. His dedication to the school, ESL teaching, and his fellow teachers will be missed in the office and around town. He'll still be here in Korea. Here's to Rhett:

Rhett and me in Cambodia on Christmas Day!

Suzanna, Rhett and Joel at the Itaewon scavenger hunt in September 2006.

Rhett right after a shave and a haircut.

Rhett cooking food for us at Deok Jeok Do last October.

Rhett on the Han river. This was my second day and he helped for a smooth transition. Thanks!

We have tons of videos of him, but I think those will stay on facebook.com rather than the public blog. He leaves Wonderland at the beginning of September. I will post about his triumphant exit then. This was just a tease and a the first glimpse at a new direction for Rhett in Korea. Good luck, buddy!

Now, onto the tickets. Here's the time table...

So, that is the trip on the way there. I'm happy that I will get to be with 고 this time. 고 did a lot of work finding these tickets and all of us should thank her. Thanks 고고!!!

I know Kristin, Trey and Hattie wanted to be there to welcome us, but we'll be waiting for you instead!!!

The flight back isn't as exciting to write about, so I will stop here!!

Fun times await!!!!

Free My Seoul Welcomes 김고운!

고 will be posting on here with me and her posts will be in yellow. So, keep an eye out for her! 안녕!

I am excited to write on here from now on with George and keep you posted on what's new in our lives in Korea and everywhere in between! Good bye till next time! Annyeong!

Happy Birthday Dad!

June 9th, 1951 was the day for this guy. Wow! I can't believe you're actually 56. Do you feel that old? Haha! Sorry...

However, I remember a five year old Mark Wheeler who innocently said, "Coach Hogan! You have gray hair!"

That was so classic. Since then we've seen the beard, the stache, the sideburns, the gottee and even the bald face. I think you've settled on the George Carlin look for now. Nice!

Happy Birthday John! I hope you have a great time! I can't wait to meet you guys. I hope I can handle the heat in Arizona. I don't think I have ever experienced that high temperature in my life. Happy Birthday again! Bye!

So, Happy Birthday Dad. I know you and Kathy had a nice day and I'll let call you about the tickets as soon as we buy our tickets to America!

Homeward Bound

As you all know very well by now, 고 and I are coming home for all of August plus a little more before and after. In honor of the upcoming trip I decided to add a couple videos...

Here's a 1967 Simon and Garfunkel from Monterey.

And here is the famed concert in Central Park.

I thought that those were appropriate. When I was on my way here last July, I remember being on the plane and listening to my Ipod when Homeward Bound came on. I turned it off right away as I thought it might make me homesick. I figured getting homesick on my way to Korea was kind of lame. However, I thought about how nice it would be to be listening to that on my way back home and now that time has come. I know I have seven weeks left, but it will go by fast and then 고 and I will be on our way.

We're so excited and are in the process of buying our tickets home. They are expensive though, but we'll make it!

Here's the plan...

  • July 27th: Fly from Korea to Oklahoma.

Of course we'll have several stops along the way. Our options so far are Korea to Japan to Chicago and then to Tulsa or Korea to Japan to Detroit and then to Tulsa. We'll be tired, but drinking banana coladas and martinis by the pool won't take too much effort. The jet lag might take a slight toll on us as well.

  • July 27th - August 5th: Tulsa, Oklahoma

I imagine this time will be spent sleeping, eating, drinking, swimming (고 will learn) and playing games. We're going to try and hike with the dogs, hangout with Joyce and Luis, get to know Hattie, check out some Native American sites and rock out with the family. That'll be nice. It has been a year since we last hung out and I need to have a good political spit with Dave.

  • August 5th - August 11th: Phoenix, Arizona

Now, it's time to hang out with Dad. Usually when we visit Dad, we have several things planned and this trip is not different. Besides seeing the new house and drinking and talking by the pool, we plan to check out the Grand Canyon and even head down to Nogales, Mexico. We're not too sure what to do down there as I have not ever been either, but maybe this will help you guys.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nogales,_Sonora

I'm not sure what we'll do in Mexico. Presumably we'll eat the food and drink some stiff margaritas.

Besides those two things, I'd really like to float the Snake River and get a massive sunburn like always. Maybe even ride a horse??

  • August 11th - August 17th: Ohio and Tennessee

This week will be spent traveling around visiting people mostly. We'll start in Cincinnati and get to know Hattie some more and catch up with Kristin, Trey and Sadie. We'll hike around the creek, go to a Red's game and I'm not sure there is anything else to do in Cincinnati. Oh yeah, we'll go to the ONLY Korean restaurant which in actually in Covington, KY. From Cincinnati, we'll go to Knoxville where we'll spend the rest of the week with family and my great friends. We'll drink, dance, camp and do what we always did. Most of the people have moved on, but there are still a few left. Get ready!

  • August 17th - August 25th: Family Vacation in the Adriondacks

This is going to be wild. We'll be up there for the week. We'll grill out, canoe, hike, swim, fish, sleep, play, drink, relax and enjoy being together for the week because soon after, I'll be heading back to Korea for one final run...

  • August 25th - September 2nd - 6th

This will be our time to relax and tie up any loose ends before we cruise out. I know that I need to renew my Tennessee drivers license at a fictious address. I have not lived there in a couple years, but I don't want to have to take the written drivers test again. I will sometime, but not now.

The whole trip will be a nice break. I will miss Korea though. Korea is my home. It'll be strange driving my car instead of filing into the crowded, but nice, subways of Seoul. It will be weird ordering food without incident. I'm not sure if I remember what it's like to be in a house or feel carpet under my feet. It'll be hard to use restraint when making fun of people because I'll run the risk of people understanding what I'm saying. I'm not going to even comment on how odd it will be to see white people. At least I'll have my favorite person with me reminding me of our home...

If you want to do something special with me and 고, then let me know now...

The Human Wall

Martial Arts and other forms of fighting are very big all over the world, but especially here in Asia. Korea would never claim to produce the world's greatest fighters, but when it comes to this guy, they do have some legitimate right to stand tall.

His name is 최홍만 (Choi Hong Man: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choi_Hong_Man ). He's huge and besides being one of the best K-1 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-1) fighters, he is quite the celebrity in Korea.

First, here's a compilation of him fighting. He's lost only once...

He also does a few other things though. Note the size difference.

And you can even catch him doing this...

We're actually watching him fight right now. I was inspired to share it with you guys at home.

Memorial Day in Korea (D-Day for the Rest of the World)

고 and I didn't do too much, but the day before my school went to the War Memorial Museum.

Not too many pics of the museum, but here's an album with me and students.

Colbert v. Korea

As you know, Colbert did a satirical skit where he "reined in Rain" and made his very own Korean pop music video. It was so funny! However, the humor was lost on the Korean media and they viewed it as an attack on their international superstar, Rain. I understand it though because they simply do not know his humor or his TV persona.

Regardless, it made for a funny clip. I really like the incorrect translation of Korea. That's classic.

Here's the video from Comedy Central. (Click on the link and it will take you to the video after a 10 second plug for the station.)

부처님 오신날!!!

We had a couple days of vacation last week, so 고 and I decided we would go and see some of Korea! We had the days off because it was Buddha's birthday on Thursday. The title, 부처님 오신날, literally means the day Buddha (부처) came to earth. So we reserved the train tickets and hotel and headed to 경주 (Gyeongju) for a couple days and then to 부산 (Busan -a port city which is Korea's second largest city).

We woke up at about 430am and got ready and headed to the subway. We had tickets to Daegu on the fast KTX train and then we had tickets for the slow train from Daegu to Gyeongju. The train went by fast as we filled it with music, sleep and of course, Madlibs...

The reason we were going to Gyeonju is because it was the capitol of Korea hundreds of years ago when it was a Buddhist nation. There is a rich history there.

www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyeongju

We went to a few sites and did the tourist thing. It was a nice change to get out of the big city and see some grass and trees, but we soon found out that we missed how easy it was to eat, drink and get around in Seoul. We had long waits for buses and quite a hard time finding a single hof to sit and relax over a beer.

We stayed at Hotel Hyundai. It was the nice, but far from the dozens of digs the family has put me up in over the years. It did have a bathtub (which is rare in Korea) and for some reason we had two beds. So, we did the only thing we could in the room...

We ate an over priced dinner and listened to an awful Russian duo sing mediocre English songs to the whole restaurant. It was so bad. We had a great time with each other though.

We hopped on a bus for Busan and were there in no time! It was nice to smell the ocean air and see the occasional palm tree. The beach was small, but it was good enough.

고 was so cute it the water!!!

We stayed in a hotel that was not as luxurious as we first thought when we paid for it. During the day it was tolerable, but once night came, well...

A little creepy, huh?

The beach was fun at night too!!

So, we made the most of our time off and I got to share new parts of the country with the girl I love so much! She is so amazing!

From the South!!!

고 and I had a great time in Gyeonju for Buddha's birthday. Both of us were surprised by the number of followers in Korea. It was beautiful weather and we loved the hotel. Now, we're in Busan and are getting ready to go to the beach for the evening. We'll be back in Seoul tomorrow evening to write and post some pictures.

Real quick...the hotel we stayed in while in Gyeonju was amazing. However, the hotel we chose for this night is designed more for the traveling bachelor rather than the family. The pics should make you laugh...

We accept!!!

We got our invitation in the mail today. I'm not sure we've ever seen something so American! 고 was so happy to see her name on there as well! You guys are really welcoming her in and that's so great!

Hello, it's me 고운! First of all, thank you very much for the invitation! That was the sweetest invitation card ever! That card just gave me an idea about America with lots of sun and drinks in the summer! That really excited me big time! Ah, I saw some pictures of your old house and it was a very nice and big house. In fact, I'm kind of scared of big houses like that since there are only fairly small houses in Korea. Well, I should get used to them soon enough! Well, thanks again and you have a great night! Bye bye!

On a side note, we went to the Zoo the other day. This is a racoon dog. Since mom and Uncle John had a pet raccoon of their own I figured this could be nice blend of Spot and Rocky. I've never heard of it, but it's here!!!

Alright, here are flamingos. Hmm.. I'm pretty sure what's in your head!! :D That's right! My lovely George's legs! hahahaha! When I saw those flamingos and I looked at George and the first thing he said was 'shut uuuuup~' and smiled. He knew exactly what I was thinking and the funny part is that he knew that those legs reminded him of his own legs haha! But, here's the important part. I love his legs, those are the most adorable legs in the world! Well, anyway, we had a great time in the zoo together.I always have great time with him! He is a magician of love and caring! Aww! I'm so happy!!! :D

Isn't she great?

Hi everyone!

Hi,I guess this is the first time for me to say hello to George's family and friends! I've been a little bit shy to say hello to Harriet and Kristin eventhough I've had millions of chances to talk to you while he was on the phone! :D George has tried hard to put me on the phone several times but I was just so shy!! haha! Well, it'll be soon enough! I would love to talk to you guys and be extremely close to you. George is the most incredible and indiscribable man in the world and I am certain that his family is just as great as he is!

In about 2 months, we will all see each other in person and I am so excited and, honestly, a bit nervous! ahh! I just can't wait!! - Harriet and Dave, Uncle John, Kristin, Trey and Hattie and also Sadie, we will have great time this summer! Well, I hope you guys have a nice day! I am saying good bye for now :)

From,

고운

P.S John and Kathy, you're next....

He's Singin' in Korean (Revisited)

The Korean media sadly did not understand the humor or Colberts' satirical TV persona, so understandably they viewed it as an attack on one of their own. However, 고운 watched it and thought it was so funny. We have watched it over and over again since then. It's so funny!!!

So, Colbert gave an update on his "rivalry" with Rain. Here is the most recent clip.
(Click on the link and it will take to you to the Comedy Central site. It will load after a 10 second plug.)

Mom told me about this clip that Colbert did on his great show. I had told 고운 about it, but had yet to see it. We watched it today and just laughed and laughed. It was hilarious! Watch it here...

The best part is that I his Korean is better than mine, but that's not hard...

김고운 and 조지 호갠

We had this done at 서울 대공원 (Seoul Zoo and Botanical Garden)

Life is going so well over here in Korea. The weather is beautiful, summer is approaching, teaching is going great and I have the privilege to spend my free time with my life-changing partner. 고운 is so wonderful and full of life! I love her with all my heart and those of you lucky enough to meet her will too! We'll be in America from the end of July to the beginning of September so you'll have a chance soon! We're excited to travel there and she's so excited (and nervous) to meet my family and friends...

I have not put ANY recent pictures up in months except for the pics of our new place, so here are some good ones!!!

The next three pics are from our 간년 (Ganhyun) trip...

In the train!!!

On the rocks after a rained-out climbing trip.

This is our 촉구 (Cho-ku)team, the Power T!! We dominated! 고 led the way with her precision serving! I was so proud!

These are all random pics of 고 and me!

So, although I have not been active on the blog, I am here and I am loving it all!

New Digs...

Again, it's been too long since we last met here. I hope all is well because it's wonderful on this end.

So, here's a little catch up!

About a month and a half ago, Terry (Wonderlands glorified crossing gaurd), told me that I had to move apartments. I was a bit shocked at first. I had been planning on moving into Aaron or Suzanna's place after they left, but he said it would be two weeks before that would be possible. So, I thought I was going to have to move to some new place and then move to one of the other places two weeks after that. I was not thrilled about that. So, I went with Terry and checked out the new place and it was not too great. I was not happy about it at first. I took some pictures with my phone and sent them to 고운. Afterall, she would be living there too!

As always, she was positive and upbeat about the new place. That made me feel much better. We reminded ourselves that we would be setting it up and decorating it together. It would really be our place.

Let's remember my old place. I had an old and heavily used TV, a small board for a bed and a kitchen that I could barely get my gut in and out of without effort. It was not that bad and I really never complained, but I was excited about a new place.
고운 and I effortlessly packed most of our stuff and were ready for the move. I moved the stuff with the help of some teachers while 고 was at her Chinese class.

That night the new place looked different though. It seemed bigger, newer and, most of all, came with new appliances! I was thrilled! we left and went to a local hof, 쪼끼쪼끼, and started drinking. 고 met us later and was greeted by an overly excited me who wanted to show her our new place.

It was a mess that first night, but we have made it a home now. It's changed since these pictures were taken, but here's the jist of it...

We bought a lamp and a rug for the new place. Having only overhead light gets to be really awful after awhile. We like it. Also, that chair has been moved!

Here's another angle. Notice the Korean and American flags! That's right.

The only thing that bothers us about the place is the small window. It's seems biggeer than the picture makes it appear, but oh well.

That door leads to the bathroom. There's 고!

These are of the kitchen! We have more room and a fancy new washing machine! It's all so new!!!

And the bathroom. It's a bit smaller than the old place, but the water pressure and cleanliness of it is amazing. 고 does not have to clean this floor like she did in the old place!

And here's the outside of my building. I'm not sure what was here before, but the building is brand new. It comes with no keys, only codes. Plus, it has an elevator! That doesn't matter though because the apartment is on the first floor.

There's my door!

Elevator!

Just outside the building!

And the rest are foyers and hallways!

So that's that. We're really digging the new place.

Now, what else?

My new class is going great. They are tons of fun and Dinah, who is still my partner, and I are enjoying teaching them.

The weather has finally gievn in to the spring and it's beautiful is Korea again. The yellow sand from Mongolia can get a bit old sometimes, but that will pass.

고운 and I are planning a trip to Japan soon as well. I'll keep you updated on that too!

I will try and remember to put up some pictures of my new students and other happenings soon!

안녕!

Finally, a little culture...

More to come, but I did finally go and see a little traditonal Korean culture. I'm going to more places in the weeks to come, but here's a picture or two. I'll write more this week...

A "Friendly" Face

People are friendly here. There's no doubting that. Whether you are lost or just asking to buy a pack of cigarettes, they are more than happy to lend a helping hand most of the time. This is not true all the time and sometimes people are too busy to help a women with groceries and a baby into a cab, but that's where the chivilrous Westerners come into the scenario.

There is one man that goes beyond the call of duty. There is one man that is the center of office conversation and there is one man that has a way of making all of us feel downright uncomfortable and, often times, violated. This man is known only as he introduced himself to us after weeks of ambigous conversations and flirtings. He is Mr. Shin. He is the owner and pretty much only employee (by choice) of the 7/11 next to our school. He speaks English well, but chooses to only use the most serious tone when talking to us.

Mr. Shin has a way of taking something very innocent like the weather and turning it into something that is, well, weird. Here's a couple quick examples of how he navigates through conversations with his his two favorites.

I went in the there on a unseasonably warm day in mid-January and bought some yogurt. I was paying and making basic and simple talk with Mr. Shin and he looked at me as if something was really troubling him and with all his might he conjured up something quite odd.

"It is very beautiful outside...like you."

He looked down right away as if he had just confessed a horrible secret. I smiled and gave a polite yet dismissive, "Yeah." and walked out beaming with delight and excitement as I knew I would be sharing this revelation with my fellow teachers.

He has also taken a particular interest in my good buddy, Liam. Liam has a different relationship with him. Mind you, we both have girlfriends and I think I committed the sin of going in there with Go-woon, but had I known Mr. Shin would essentially shun me for the weeks to come I would have reconsidered the seriousness of such a move. So, I want to throw out a couple quotes that Shin has landed on Liam. They are creepy and, in my opinion, blatant attempts to make sure Liam knows that Mr. Shin is "interested" in him.

Liam works in the afternoon and one day he was getting a quick bite to eat in there. Mr. Shin knows all of our habits and diets and is always watching us very closely in there. So, Liam puts his intentioanlly light meal on the counter. Mr. Shin asks him if he had eaten lunch yet and Liam says that he had not, hence the sandwich he was attempting to pay for. Mr. Shin was visibly hurt by this ommission and wanted Liam to know.

"When you say these things...(pause for effect and to display his grief)...I feel regret."

I mean, that is an odd thing to say, but it's not homosexual by any means. Try these two though...

"I would like private time with you."

"Are you ever alone."

Those two came from innocent checkout scenarios. That's odd...

So, now Mr. Shin has become somewhat of a legend for what he says. Liam and I go there just to see what else he's going to say and see who and for what reaosn he's going to snub someone that day. Liam refers to him as our "Demi god".

While I did want to share the Mr. Shin story with you (He's married by the way, but we always joke that he tells his wife, "Why can't you be more like them.") the real point of this was that a lot is misunderstood here. If you recall one of my earlier posts when I was told I looked like a Canadian pop star, you can see that while they are trying to compliment you, it comes out a little odd. I've been told that I am handsome more times than I can count, but most of those were by men rather than women.

Then it made me think. Would Americans even try to compliment a foreigner in our country? Would they even make the attempt to talk to them and share in on a different culture or would they make a crude comment to their friend or think something bad about them to themselves. I know what I think Americans would do, but maybe I'm used the the honesty and genuine kindness that Koreans generate.

What do you think? -or Do you think Mr. Shin really wants private time with Liam or is he just trying to be folksy?

I'd like to share some favorites...

I was turned on to these poets in high school and while they are from different era's there are many commonalities. Howl is very long and hard to follow at times, but he wrote it in three parts. He addresses repressed 1950's America first and how some ingenious minds were alienated or overlooked. They could have helped shape a different America, but were never given the chance. Part II delves into the "industrial machine" and how the people in Part I were sacrificed to create the environment for an industrial civilization to take grips on the minds of the an unsuspecting and malleable society. Part III is a dedication to a man (Carl Solomon) that he met on his path. I have a hard time with this part. He closes by confessing that everything in the world is holy and nothing should be disrespected and overlooked.

Howl
Allen Ginsberg

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by
madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn
looking for an angry fix,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly
connection to the starry dynamo in the machin-
ery of night,
who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat
up smoking in the supernatural darkness of
cold-water flats floating across the tops of cities
contemplating jazz,
who bared their brains to Heaven under the El and
saw Mohammedan angels staggering on tene-
ment roofs illuminated,
who passed through universities with radiant cool eyes
hallucinating Arkansas and Blake-light tragedy
among the scholars of war,
who were expelled from the academies for crazy &
publishing obscene odes on the windows of the
skull,
who cowered in unshaven rooms in underwear, burn-
ing their money in wastebaskets and listening
to the Terror through the wall,
who got busted in their pubic beards returning through
Laredo with a belt of marijuana for New York,
who ate fire in paint hotels or drank turpentine in
Paradise Alley, death, or purgatoried their
torsos night after night
with dreams, with drugs, with waking nightmares, al-
cohol and cock and endless balls,
incomparable blind; streets of shuddering cloud and
lightning in the mind leaping toward poles of
Canada & Paterson, illuminating all the mo-
tionless world of Time between,
Peyote solidities of halls, backyard green tree cemetery
dawns, wine drunkenness over the rooftops,
storefront boroughs of teahead joyride neon
blinking traffic light, sun and moon and tree
vibrations in the roaring winter dusks of Brook-
lyn, ashcan rantings and kind king light of mind,
who chained themselves to subways for the endless
ride from Battery to holy Bronx on benzedrine
until the noise of wheels and children brought
them down shuddering mouth-wracked and
battered bleak of brain all drained of brilliance
in the drear light of Zoo,
who sank all night in submarine light of Bickford's
floated out and sat through the stale beer after
noon in desolate Fugazzi's, listening to the crack
of doom on the hydrogen jukebox,
who talked continuously seventy hours from park to
pad to bar to Bellevue to museum to the Brook-
lyn Bridge,
lost battalion of platonic conversationalists jumping
down the stoops off fire escapes off windowsills
off Empire State out of the moon,
yacketayakking screaming vomiting whispering facts
and memories and anecdotes and eyeball kicks
and shocks of hospitals and jails and wars,
whole intellects disgorged in total recall for seven days
and nights with brilliant eyes, meat for the
Synagogue cast on the pavement,
who vanished into nowhere Zen New Jersey leaving a
trail of ambiguous picture postcards of Atlantic
City Hall,
suffering Eastern sweats and Tangerian bone-grind-
ings and migraines of China under junk-with-
drawal in Newark's bleak furnished room,
who wandered around and around at midnight in the
railroad yard wondering where to go, and went,
leaving no broken hearts,
who lit cigarettes in boxcars boxcars boxcars racketing
through snow toward lonesome farms in grand-
father night,
who studied Plotinus Poe St. John of the Cross telep-
athy and bop kabbalah because the cosmos in-
stinctively vibrated at their feet in Kansas,
who loned it through the streets of Idaho seeking vis-
ionary indian angels who were visionary indian
angels,
who thought they were only mad when Baltimore
gleamed in supernatural ecstasy,
who jumped in limousines with the Chinaman of Okla-
homa on the impulse of winter midnight street
light smalltown rain,
who lounged hungry and lonesome through Houston
seeking jazz or sex or soup, and followed the
brilliant Spaniard to converse about America
and Eternity, a hopeless task, and so took ship
to Africa,
who disappeared into the volcanoes of Mexico leaving
behind nothing but the shadow of dungarees
and the lava and ash of poetry scattered in fire
place Chicago,
who reappeared on the West Coast investigating the
F.B.I. in beards and shorts with big pacifist
eyes sexy in their dark skin passing out incom-
prehensible leaflets,
who burned cigarette holes in their arms protesting
the narcotic tobacco haze of Capitalism,
who distributed Supercommunist pamphlets in Union
Square weeping and undressing while the sirens
of Los Alamos wailed them down, and wailed
down Wall, and the Staten Island ferry also
wailed,
who broke down crying in white gymnasiums naked
and trembling before the machinery of other
skeletons,
who bit detectives in the neck and shrieked with delight
in policecars for committing no crime but their
own wild cooking pederasty and intoxication,
who howled on their knees in the subway and were
dragged off the roof waving genitals and manu-
scripts,
who let themselves be fucked in the ass by saintly
motorcyclists, and screamed with joy,
who blew and were blown by those human seraphim,
the sailors, caresses of Atlantic and Caribbean
love,
who balled in the morning in the evenings in rose
gardens and the grass of public parks and
cemeteries scattering their semen freely to
whomever come who may,
who hiccuped endlessly trying to giggle but wound up
with a sob behind a partition in a Turkish Bath
when the blond & naked angel came to pierce
them with a sword,
who lost their loveboys to the three old shrews of fate
the one eyed shrew of the heterosexual dollar
the one eyed shrew that winks out of the womb
and the one eyed shrew that does nothing but
sit on her ass and snip the intellectual golden
threads of the craftsman's loom,
who copulated ecstatic and insatiate with a bottle of
beer a sweetheart a package of cigarettes a can-
dle and fell off the bed, and continued along
the floor and down the hall and ended fainting
on the wall with a vision of ultimate cunt and
come eluding the last gyzym of consciousness,
who sweetened the snatches of a million girls trembling
in the sunset, and were red eyed in the morning
but prepared to sweeten the snatch of the sun
rise, flashing buttocks under barns and naked
in the lake,
who went out whoring through Colorado in myriad
stolen night-cars, N.C., secret hero of these
poems, cocksman and Adonis of Denver-joy
to the memory of his innumerable lays of girls
in empty lots & diner backyards, moviehouses'
rickety rows, on mountaintops in caves or with
gaunt waitresses in familiar roadside lonely pet-
ticoat upliftings & especially secret gas-station
solipsisms of johns, & hometown alleys too,
who faded out in vast sordid movies, were shifted in
dreams, woke on a sudden Manhattan, and
picked themselves up out of basements hung
over with heartless Tokay and horrors of Third
Avenue iron dreams & stumbled to unemploy-
ment offices,
who walked all night with their shoes full of blood on
the snowbank docks waiting for a door in the
East River to open to a room full of steamheat
and opium,
who created great suicidal dramas on the apartment
cliff-banks of the Hudson under the wartime
blue floodlight of the moon & their heads shall
be crowned with laurel in oblivion,
who ate the lamb stew of the imagination or digested
the crab at the muddy bottom of the rivers of
Bowery,
who wept at the romance of the streets with their
pushcarts full of onions and bad music,
who sat in boxes breathing in the darkness under the
bridge, and rose up to build harpsichords in
their lofts,
who coughed on the sixth floor of Harlem crowned
with flame under the tubercular sky surrounded
by orange crates of theology,
who scribbled all night rocking and rolling over lofty
incantations which in the yellow morning were
stanzas of gibberish,
who cooked rotten animals lung heart feet tail borsht
& tortillas dreaming of the pure vegetable
kingdom,
who plunged themselves under meat trucks looking for
an egg,
who threw their watches off the roof to cast their ballot
for Eternity outside of Time, & alarm clocks
fell on their heads every day for the next decade,
who cut their wrists three times successively unsuccess-
fully, gave up and were forced to open antique
stores where they thought they were growing
old and cried,
who were burned alive in their innocent flannel suits
on Madison Avenue amid blasts of leaden verse
& the tanked-up clatter of the iron regiments
of fashion & the nitroglycerine shrieks of the
fairies of advertising & the mustard gas of sinis-
ter intelligent editors, or were run down by the
drunken taxicabs of Absolute Reality,
who jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge this actually hap-
pened and walked away unknown and forgotten
into the ghostly daze of Chinatown soup alley
ways & firetrucks, not even one free beer,
who sang out of their windows in despair, fell out of
the subway window, jumped in the filthy Pas-
saic, leaped on negroes, cried all over the street,
danced on broken wineglasses barefoot smashed
phonograph records of nostalgic European
1930s German jazz finished the whiskey and
threw up groaning into the bloody toilet, moans
in their ears and the blast of colossal steam
whistles,
who barreled down the highways of the past journeying
to each other's hotrod-Golgotha jail-solitude
watch or Birmingham jazz incarnation,
who drove crosscountry seventytwo hours to find out
if I had a vision or you had a vision or he had
a vision to find out Eternity,
who journeyed to Denver, who died in Denver, who
came back to Denver & waited in vain, who
watched over Denver & brooded & loned in
Denver and finally went away to find out the
Time, & now Denver is lonesome for her heroes,
who fell on their knees in hopeless cathedrals praying
for each other's salvation and light and breasts,
until the soul illuminated its hair for a second,
who crashed through their minds in jail waiting for
impossible criminals with golden heads and the
charm of reality in their hearts who sang sweet
blues to Alcatraz,
who retired to Mexico to cultivate a habit, or Rocky
Mount to tender Buddha or Tangiers to boys
or Southern Pacific to the black locomotive or
Harvard to Narcissus to Woodlawn to the
daisychain or grave,
who demanded sanity trials accusing the radio of hyp
notism & were left with their insanity & their
hands & a hung jury,
who threw potato salad at CCNY lecturers on Dadaism
and subsequently presented themselves on the
granite steps of the madhouse with shaven heads
and harlequin speech of suicide, demanding in-
stantaneous lobotomy,
and who were given instead the concrete void of insulin
Metrazol electricity hydrotherapy psycho-
therapy occupational therapy pingpong &
amnesia,
who in humorless protest overturned only one symbolic
pingpong table, resting briefly in catatonia,
returning years later truly bald except for a wig of
blood, and tears and fingers, to the visible mad
man doom of the wards of the madtowns of the
East,
Pilgrim State's Rockland's and Greystone's foetid
halls, bickering with the echoes of the soul, rock-
ing and rolling in the midnight solitude-bench
dolmen-realms of love, dream of life a night-
mare, bodies turned to stone as heavy as the
moon,
with mother finally ******, and the last fantastic book
flung out of the tenement window, and the last
door closed at 4. A.M. and the last telephone
slammed at the wall in reply and the last fur-
nished room emptied down to the last piece of
mental furniture, a yellow paper rose twisted
on a wire hanger in the closet, and even that
imaginary, nothing but a hopeful little bit of
hallucination
ah, Carl, while you are not safe I am not safe, and
now you're really in the total animal soup of
time
and who therefore ran through the icy streets obsessed
with a sudden flash of the alchemy of the use
of the ellipse the catalog the meter & the vibrat-
ing plane,
who dreamt and made incarnate gaps in Time & Space
through images juxtaposed, and trapped the
archangel of the soul between 2 visual images
and joined the elemental verbs and set the noun
and dash of consciousness together jumping
with sensation of Pater Omnipotens Aeterna
Deus
to recreate the syntax and measure of poor human
prose and stand before you speechless and intel-
ligent and shaking with shame, rejected yet con-
fessing out the soul to conform to the rhythm
of thought in his naked and endless head,
the madman bum and angel beat in Time, unknown,
yet putting down here what might be left to say
in time come after death,
and rose reincarnate in the ghostly clothes of jazz in
the goldhorn shadow of the band and blew the
suffering of America's naked mind for love into
an eli eli lamma lamma sabacthani saxophone
cry that shivered the cities down to the last radio
with the absolute heart of the poem of life butchered
out of their own bodies good to eat a thousand
years.

Carl Solomon! I'm with you in Rockland
where you're madder than I am
I'm with you in Rockland
where you must feel very strange
I'm with you in Rockland
where you imitate the shade of my mother

I'm with you in Rockland
where we are great writers on the same dreadful
typewriter
I'm with you in Rockland
where your condition has become serious and
is reported on the radio

where the faculties of the skull no longer admit
the worms of the senses

where you drink the tea of the breasts of the
spinsters of Utica

harpies of the Bronx

where you scream in a straightjacket that you're
losing the game of the actual pingpong of the
abyss
I'm with you in Rockland
where you bang on the catatonic piano the soul
is innocent and immortal it should never die
ungodly in an armed madhouse
I'm with you in Rockland

cross in the void
I'm with you in Rockland
where you accuse your doctors of insanity and
plot the Hebrew socialist revolution against the
fascist national Golgotha
I'm with you in Rockland

and resurrect your living human Jesus from the
superhuman tomb

The imaginery and beauty that this man conjures up is inspiring...

Kubla Khan
Samuel Taylor Coleridge

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree :
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man

Down to a sunless sea.

So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round :
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree ;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.
But oh ! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover !
A savage place ! as holy and enchanted
As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover !
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced :
Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail :
And 'mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
It flung up momently the sacred river.
Five miles meandering with a mazy motion
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
Then reached the caverns measureless to man,
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean :
And 'mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
Ancestral voices prophesying war !

The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves ;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.

It was a miracle of rare device,
A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice !
A damsel with a dulcimer
In a vision once I saw :
It was an Abyssinian maid,
And on her dulcimer she played,
Singing of Mount Abora.
Could I revive within me
Her symphony and song,
To such a deep delight 'twould win me,

That with music loud and long,
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome ! those caves of ice !
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware ! Beware !
His flashing eyes, his floating hair !
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

I've been reading Ginsberg again lately...

So, I've been here for about seven months now and I will say that it has been an incredible experience. I want to talk about some highlights...

The job has been tremendous. I look forward to going in and teaching these kids everyday. I liked teaching last year at home, but I never had the same bond with those kids as I do with these guys. The kids see me as something totally different from them. They see me as a source of variety and, even at their tender age, an icon for what the Western world is about. We learn, laugh, play and listen to music together and together we have grow close. Last week we had our kindergarten graduation. It was a very big deal for the kids, the parents, the school and for the teachers. We were charged with writing and directing skits, songs and dances. You all know that the performance arts are not a speciality of mine, but I think my two classes did really well. My Bear class did a little eight minute skit and dance. It went so well. The dressed up in rain jackets, boots and had their little yellow umbrella's. They talked about the weather and then sang and danced to "Rain Drops Keeping Fallin on My Head". I was very proud to see them on stage with big smiles, dancing and singing just as we practiced. I had never been part of something like that before and although it's a silly little graduation for Korean seven year olds, I got a sense of accomplishment from it. We all worked so hard and to see them up there nailing it was great. Sadly, they all will leave at the end of the month and I will get a new class. I will miss these kids a lot. They have learned a lot and we have had so many laughs. My favorite, Victor, is pretty much a Korean version of me. He dances, laughs and acts JUST like me. He always tells me,

"Teacher, I will come to America and go to Tennessee and we will drink the Soju together."

I laugh and remind him that he will be in America next year and that he will not be old enough to drink Soju. Still, it's funny to hear a little kid say that. So, I will have a new class in a couple weeks, but until them I will cherish the time with this bunch...

I broke down and got a cell phone. I'm so cool. It was nice to not have one, but it was time. I also finally got a haircut the other day. It's okay. I was always scared to get it done in Korea since I had heard all these scary stories. Go-woon (Karie) went with me and made sure that I came out looking like a white guy rather than fashionable Korean male which really looks like a gay guy.

We have gotten two new teachers. One from Cleveland and the other from Missouri. They're fun, but I just don't know them well enough yet. Two other teachers just finished their contracts and that why we got new guys in here. Here's all that we have left from Pat and Dena. It's a movie short. It's filmed in our school and at apartments.

I have also met a girl that I'm very fond of. Her name is Kim Go-woon. She's lots of fun and we have been inseparable since we met. I'm very happy to meet her, so wish me luck!

I'm trying to plan some more trips for the next few months and we'll see where that takes me. I'm thinking Japan and China and maybe Taiwan or something like that. I don't have too much time and the planning is most of the trouble...

I have grown quite accumstomed to Korea. Besides family and friends, there are few things that I miss. Sure, the variety of food in America is nice, but I have enjoyed eating Korea food. It's healthy and generally pretty good. I do miss American bread a lot. I just hate the taste of it here.

So, I have five months left and I intend on making the most of it. I'm sad that I'm on the backside of my time here, but that's life. What's next I have yet to figure out, but I do know that I want to spend some good time with family, friends, nature, music and, most of all, Sadie!!!!

Here's another video that I find funny!!
