Loved the kids flashing the Peace sign. Wonder where they learned that?
It's actually borrowed from the WWII era. It's a "V" for VICTORY. There were thousands of pro-Alliance propanda war posters made during the war with subtle images of the "V" being thrown in the shot. We brought it here during the Korean War and it has not worn off. However, I doubt that any of the kids (or even adults) know why they do it.
American's did it in the 1960's as an ironic twist. It did mean peace then, but it was a jab at a failed policy. I doubt many of the hipsters knew what they were up to either. Nixon's infamous helicopter picture was actually the "V" for victory, but that was viewed as an attempt for Nixon to meet the counter-culture halfway.
Now, it's just a cute thing to do in pictures...
